Casting for Disney's Santa Claus 4

Looks like David Krumholtz will get promoted from Bernard to Santa this time around.

Project Runway - Finale, Part One

At the top of the show, we see the four remaining designers meet with Heidi one last time. She tells them they have $8000 to create twelve outfits for Fashion Week and reiterated for the umpty-thirteenth time that after the mini-show between Rami and Chris only three of them will be going to Bryant Park. Ok, Heids, we know there were five designers on the runway, so you can cut the crap.

Then they troop to the roof of the Gotham apartments to share a toast with Frau Seal and Tim Gunn. The designers then do some weird dancing.

The designers go home to work on their collections. After some time passes, Tim pays each a "surprise" visit.

New York rent is so high, Christian basically lives and works in a closet. How he coped with all of those feathers in such a tight space is beyond me. Speaking of feathers, he showed Tim a pair of feathered skinny pants that were just atrocious. Tim kindly called it "a lot of look" but also "costumey." He advised Ferocia to "bring an editing eye" to the process. In other words, leave the crap at home. Ferocia can't fit any other humans in his apartment, so he is forced to show Tim photos of his sister and mother.

Tim then goes to see what Jillian has been up to. She researched 15th Century armor for her collection, causing Tim to rave over the detail work on one of her jackets. Then he disses her palette as being "a cloudy day." Despite that, she takes Tim home to meet her family on Long Island, where we get to see real humans rather than photographs.

Tim takes a break from the cold weather and flies to LA to see Rami. Instead of family, he introduces two friends to us. Like we care. But he also speaks warmly of his family, including his late mother (who looks a lot like Jillian with her chin chopped off) and his wonderful stepmother.

Rami has a large studio that Tim calls "phenomenal." C'mon Tim, ye of the $1.50 word can't find an adjective better than that currently overused one? You may as well have said, "awesome." His advice on the Joan of Arc-influenced collection: "pull it back a bit." How weird is it that Rami used a similar inspiration to Jillian's (Joan of Arc = 15th Century Armor)? Is it because he thought that her resemblance to his mother had a deeper meaning?

Thanks to TLo for the screen cap!

Finally, Tim flies back to wintry New York to see Chris, whose collection was about "beauty with a quirk," and was "95% fashion with 5% costume thrown in." Tim gags at the concept of the human hair that adorned several outfits. Why is it that the fur of dead animals is ok, but donated human hair from live specimens isn't? Hair extensions on a head is fine, but on a skirt it's not? If it were goat hair, it would only have raised half an eyebrow. At this point, Tim decides to go all didactic on Chris's ass and tells a little story about the monkey house at the zoo: When you walk in you think, "OMG this place stinks. After twenty minutes, it's not too bad. After an hour, it doesn't smell at all." Chris has apparently been living in the monkey house.

Then for no good reason, they visit a friend of Chris' who lives in an apartment filled floor-to-ceiling with tacky, gilded, rococo crap. He's the gay version of a crazy cat lady, but without the cats. The amount of dust in the place has to be...phenomenal.

Cut to Fashion Week. The four designers are once again forced to live together and immediately Jillian and Christian begin bickering like children. "Are you going to be nice to me?" "Are YOU going to be nice to ME?" Ok, kids, time for bed.

The next morning is Rami and Chris three-piece challenge and with the help of the squabbling children, they fit their models, send them through hair and makeup, and nervously bite their fingernails as they wait for the axe to fall.

During the judging, both designers got mixed comments. "Top Designer" Michael Kors liked that Chris "thought outside the box," but also deemed his velvet-and-black-safety-pin dress a "velvet condom." Nina appreciated Rami's tailored aspects, but thought his blue jacket was too much, as did Kors.

It almost seems that Rami got more negative feedback...yet he won.

What they didn't show us.

Chris' designs were just too costumey for the judges, and I guess they were for an American designer. But go look at the recent collections of Christian Lacroix (especially couture), Viktor & Rolf, any top European designer, and you'll see costume out the wazoo. Americans are just too conservative, fashion-wise.

And this season is still boring.

Milan Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Moschino Cheap and Chic

Moschino's Fall '08 Cheap and Chic collection encompasses everything from the fun and frivolous to business attire. One could only buy Moschino and have an outfit for every occasion.

The bold plaid suit is very fun, but it looks like the model has a bad toothache. Her friend Pebbles Flintstone is ready for a night on the town in her animal print dress and gorgeous fuchsia suede boots.

For more formal, or work, occasions, the first two outfits are perfect. Serious, but with a lot of whimsy. The rose graphic on the cream coat reminds me of the Lancome symbol.

Add some color to the workplace, or be more serious in cream. And for evening wear - go Elvis!

Three coats that are serious, fun, and fashionista, respectively. I love them coupled with the hats - reminds me of Penelope Pitstop (anyone remember that?).

Milan Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Jil Sander

German designer Jil Sander's Fall '08 collection is full of somber colors and wonderfully geometric shapes.

From the simple yet elegant suit...

To coats that are works of sculpture. (The second one is my favorite.)

There are some simple dresses too... (the fabric looks scratchy to me)

...and even a couple of gowns. Although long, these have a casual air about them.

80th Annual Academy Awards

Last night was the occasion of the 80th Annual Academy Awards, an event that might not have happened had the writers' strike not ended. Lucky for us, we fashion bloggers have a lot to talk about today, not all of it good.

The big color of the evening was red. Here we have Anne Hathaway in Marchesa, Ruby Dee in dark red satin by Kevan Hall, and the lovely Katherine Heigl in Escada.

Helen Mirren was stunning as ever in a custom made Georges Chakra gown. Teen sensation Miley Cyrus wore Valentino. And Heidi Klum looked fabulous in her John Galliano gown while her husband Seal sported a classically-styled Dior tux.

Black was also very popular this year, very safe compared to the bold reds that dotted the theater. Can't get safer than Laura Linney's very plain yet elegant Michael Kors gown. Kristin Chenoweth showed off her lovely shoulders in a less-than-lovely Armani Privé gown that had panels of sheer drapery that made her look hippy. And Hillary Swank wore a one-shouldered Versace. A shame about her face.

Jennifer Garner gave credit for her Oscar de la Renta gown to her stylist, Rachel Zoe. The dress is nice, but it did terrible things to Garner's boobs. Visibly pregnant, Nicole Kidman wore an unflattering Balanciaga draped with cascades of diamonds by L'Wren Scott that didn't work well with that too-wide neckline.

Doing their own color thang were Jennifer Hudson in a white Roberto Cavalli that squashed her breasts in an odd way and showed off her back fat. I thought she looked pretty, despite the dress. Faye Dunaway looked like she stepped out of a different decade with her long frosted hair and a Pamella Roland gown that appeared to have been constructed out of Godiva chocolate boxes. Kelly Preston looked lovely in that shade of egg yolk yellow, but her breasts looked a bit on the schlumpy side in the Roberto Cavalli gown.

Cameron Diaz rolled around in her bedsheets and headed out the door. But she still looked pretty darn good. (Actually she wore Dior by John Galliano.) Cate Blanchett wore Dries Van Noten. Something about it just seemed too casual for the Oscars, but it was better than the one she wore for the SAG awards. Keri Russell posed a lot in her Nina Ricci gown, but it didn't look like she particularly wanted to be there. She's far too skinny, her dress was boring on her and didn't seem to fit properly.

Tilda Swinton wore a gown from the much-lauded Alber Elbaz for Lanvin, but looked like hell with her carrot-top hair and absence of make-up. She claims never to have watched the Oscars. But surely she's watched other awards shows? Diablo Cody wore a Dior by John Galliano leopard-print silk chiffon gown that just didn't work with her quirky style. It looks as if she raided Phyllis Diller's closet for a muu-muu. And Ellen Page just turned 21, yet she dresses like an old lady in this Jean Louis Scherrer. And she still hasn't learned how to pose. Someone please introduce these ladies to a stylist.

I shouldn't pick on the kiddies, but something about Saoirse Ronan's Alberta Ferretti dress just wasn't right for her. It was too...nightgown-ish, and I hate the color. I don't know who Rosamund Pike is, or whose plain wrinkled dress she's wearing, but...hello nipples! And maybe it's because she can't possibly look even half as good as George Clooney, in or out of his classic tuxedo, Sarah Larson's Valentino Couture gown just isn't working. I swear I had a dress in that same fabric for my Skipper doll in the 70s.

Worst of all, however, was Daniel Day-Lewis' wife Rebecca Miller. WTF was she wearing? If you took the ornaments off the velvet and lace dress, it's not so bad, if a little dated. But why add the huge crystal flower stuff at the center of the bust AND the ugly red bows from the Christmas tree? And then there's the clown shoes.

Mr Day-Lewis himself looks completely idiotic in his piped-trim tux and BROWN SUEDE SHOES. Shoot me him now.

I love Stacey London, but her dress is rather a boring disappointment. Too much black!

French actress Marion Cotillard wore a Gaultier mermaid dress while Renee Zellweger was in Carolina Herrera. I'm on the fence about the mermaid, but I think Renee looks smashing.

Michael Moore's date (wife? girlfriend? sister?) looked wide and stumpy in her ugly lace dress that looked like a repurposed prom gown circa 1982.

Nice to know that the Oscars aren't considered an occasion worth washing one's hair for.

At first I thought this was Drew Barrymore in a suit. (ETA It's Steven Cojocaru.)

London Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Aquascutum

The quintessentially British brand has a long tradition of fine tailoring. They provided the British military with coats during World War I (and you wondered why they were called "trench" coats) and have been supplying the world with stylish rainwear ever since. They still make great coats, but have also expanded to include stylish fashions for both men and women.

These coats have real style, and I especially love the printed coat at center with its jaunty bow, and the black coat with its sweeping circular skirt.

The company's military past shows strongly in the second two coats.

Not all of their coats are fabulous, unfortunately. These look a bit like grade school craft projects made with felt.

I wasn't particularly excited about the non-coat items in the show, but these dresses are quite pretty.

Project Runway Season Four Reunion

Although I do enjoy watching Project Runway every week, even during relatively unexciting seasons such as this one, I really look forward to the reunion episode because it signals that the season is about to end and we'll soon find out who is the big winner. After 5 or 6 episodes, everyone has ideas of who will be in the final five four three and there's an eagerness to finish cutting through the chaff--dump the hack designers--and get to the meat of the season: the runway shows. But before we get the dramatic runway denouement, we see the designers all in one room again, making faces at each other and watching cheesy montages of themselves while Heidi and Tim pretend to be amused by the discussion of farts.

The reunion episode is also the mad Photoshopper's dream, and this season it was no different. Here are some of my observations:

Every time they cut to a shot of Victorya, she looked like someone had just pooped in her mouth.

Kevin (who claimed that he tried very hard not to be gay...if you're not gay, why such a concerted effort?) thought Elisa was much like Mork from Mork & Mindy. Except female, of course. But Kevin, Jillian was the one who wore suspenders!

Ricky cries enough to deserve a montage of his very own. Perhaps he was at the height of his menstrual cycle during filming? I still maintain that there are other reasons for the tears.

The camera made a quick cut to Victorya when the topic came up of eating Chinese food and dealing with the attending gas. Hello Bravo - she's Korean, not Chinese. Unless the point of it was to insinuate that she was the main gas leak.

If Tim had to choose a wrestling name, it would be "Polly Syllabicus." I love how Tim can use $1.50 words without seeming the least bit pretentious. I wish they had done a montage of him flexing his vocabularic muscle, as they did last time round. But we really didn't see a lot of him this season, and the only big word I can remember him using is "obfuscate" (which I did not have to look up, btw).

Nina has been called "Meana Garzilla" by a fan on the street. Harsh, but inspirational! Click image to enlarge.

OMG, VictorYa, get a sense of humor. Buy one if you have to.

Heidi seriously needs to get her bangs cut.

Rami and Chris looked reeaallly cozy together.

In a surprising turn of events, Christian was named the fan favorite. I thought it would be Elisa, or Sweet P, or Chris March, or Rami, or Jillian or.... But nooo, they gave it to the cartoon character. Now he's going to think he's even fiercer than he already does.
(Take a look at the image on the lower right of the check. Is that a bowling pin kicking a bowling ball? What does it mean? What's the connection to Bravo and Bluefly?)

Yeah, so, not realllly exciting this year. And I thought the Season Three reunion was lackluster. What this post needs is yet more Photoshopping, so here's the second installment of the tradition I started last season, a look at the Class of Season Four. Click image to enlarge.

London Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Asprey

A British tradition since 1781, Asprey has recently been retooled as a slick modern brand for luxury goods. Not just for Royals anymore, Asprey's modern traditional style now attracts trendy folks like the Beckhams.

I have always thought that mere Britishness was the height of cool elegance. Hakan Rosenius' Fall 08 collection draws inspiration from the cool and elegant blonde heroines of Alfred Hitchcock.

It's especially evident in these vintage-style frocks and suits

and these frilly ruffled creations.

But there also might be a little bit of Bond Girl in this killer leather coat.
Bond Street, that is.

This sexy flowy number (Angelina Jolie might want this one to hide her secret baby bump) seems a bit out of place in the collection, but it is lovely nonetheless.

London Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Gareth Pugh

Avant garde designer never fails to thrill with his fashion vision. This season, his inspiration seems to be some sort of alien/zombie hybrid.

The first armor-like dress (very Marilyn Manson, I think) is constructed of zippers, which also seems to be the trim on the extremely wide-shouldered cape. The last look is a sweater dress embellished with hundreds of safety pins. The off-center collar looks like it once accommodated a second head.

More pins border the first coat, which actually seems quite wearable. Not the oversized oven-mitt mittens though. The second coat is quite spectacular.

Want to smell like a goat, or just look like one? Pugh used lots of goat hair in this collection. Not sure if that's a skirt or culottes on the guy (looking like a cross between a winged monkey and the Tin Woodsman). The hairy shoulders on the gal's outfit makes me think of a bad gorilla costume. And an Italian I dated once.

These python-trimmed outfits aren't quite as outlandish, but I'll bet it all squeaks and creaks rubbing together while walking.

A Case of Mistaken Identity

At Starbucks this morning I happened to glance down at the CDs they're hawking at the moment and thought..."Rob Morrow sings?"

It was k.d. lang. I love her, and never noticed they looked so much alike. Ok, he's prettier, but not by much.

Oh, I Could Easily Be Rich

Oh, I don't mean I could make money easily...silly! If I could, what would I be doing here? I mean if I was rich, I could really grow to like it. In NY, I found myself lusting after these two Valentino handbags:

The Rosette Tote, $1950.00 at Bergdorf Goodman

The leopard print Maison Bag, $2795.00, also at Bergie's.

Yeah, I need to find a way to make that kinda disposable cash.

London Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Basso & Brooke

British designer Christopher Brook and Brazilian Bruno Basso create eclectic fashions which incorporate both intricate prints and wild textures. Their Fall 08 show looks to architecture for inspiration, particularly that of Frank Gehry and Norman Foster. Amazing hats provided by Stephen Jones.

There's so much going on in each outfit - lots of bumpy textures, interesting color combinations - but the shapes are classic. And the hats remind me of rocks, especially the first one.

The patterns and color combinations are really spectacular. The third item reminds me of painted pottery or Mary Engelbreit, but in a good way.

Three of the more "conservative" looks in the show. The leather(?) jacket on the first model has an incredible shape and would look equally chic over skinny jeans. The unusual striping on the second piece transforms an otherwise ordinary dress shape.

Project Runway - Part Eleven

This week's challenge was perhaps the one with the most potential to produce garments that had the "wow" factor. In theory, anyway. The designers went on a field trip to one of the biggest and best museums in the world: the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In a mere 45 minutes they had to find inspiration in either the Greek and Roman galleries, the Temple of Dendur, or European paintings. What an incredible amount of source material to work with encompassing thousands of years of fashion!

Not at all surprisingly, we see Rami in thrall of Greek and Roman statuary in all their draped glory. The other four designers preferred to take their inspiration from European paintings. But why did nobody choose the Temple of Dendur? It would have been a smash hit, don't you agree?

Gorge!

After time for sketching and shopping, the designers commence to sewing. Tim breaks in to share the exciting news that makeup artist and former Westworld robot Collier Strong will be helping them with the very important makeup decisions for this challenge.

After hair and makeup consultations, the designers continue to toil on their latest masterpiece. Rami is doing the expected and draping something purple-y he no doubt thinks is mauve-lous. Chris appears to be crumpling up yards and yards of dark gray fabric; I'm not sure if he's using it or throwing it away until he starts tacking it onto his dress form. Christian whips out various frilly bits and prances around the room in them like the prize pony he is. Jillian battles her inner time-constraint demons. And Sweet P cuts various shapes out of multicolored fabric. I can't get myself excited over any of it, because it seems like I've seen it all before.

The best part of the whole episode came when Sweet P's model, who was many hours late for her fitting which of course made Sweet P a nervous wreck, says "I'm sending confidence and peace." My husband then quipped, "and I'd like to send that model a pizza." That "slimming voodoo" worked by Sweet P during the denim challenge has persisted, and Lea is beyond stick-thin.

Yawn. Sorry, but I am bored just thinking about this episode. Apart from the little bit of friction between Christian and everyone else, nothing new happens. The amazing opportunity for genius has been squandered by designers doing what they've been doing all along. Even Chris bored himself enough to need a nap.

Finally the ordeal of sewing is complete and we get to see the completed designs on the runway. It was apparent that Michael Kors also had a consultation with Collier Strong, as he was wearing suspicious amounts of blusher.

Roberto Cavalli was the guest judge, and he was a wrinkly bag of mess. Why do male fashion designers - people who seemingly should care about appearances - tend to look sloppy and unkempt? Or, like Michael Kors, wear a boring uniform of jacket and jeans that could have come from The Gap?

Rami: Yawn. How predictable. Lovely, of course, but certainly no stretch for the Drapery King.

Jillian: I really liked this combination of flirty gold dress and sombre black jacket. I think it was an apt interpretation of her chosen subject matter, and very well executed. Brava, Jillian! (You should have won this, rather than One Note Wonder Boy.)

Chris: I was excited for Chris when he chose the painting he did, but I thought he would go for a huge dramatic portrait collar rather than the crumpled ruffle rip off of his winning dress with Christian. He really disappointed me, particularly after seeing what he could do at Bryant Park.

Christian: Of course he deserved the win, but hasn't anyone but me noticed that he does the same damn thing week after week after week? And would using a color really kill him? Fierce, but costume-y, and her legs look like screwdrivers.

Sweet P: Sorry, but I knew this would be the end of Sweet P from the moment she revealed her peacock inspiration. I knew she wouldn't have the balls to take it as over-the-top as she needed to to stay alive in this competition. And the crazy-lady feather hat really sealed her fate.

But one other designer was supposed to be eliminated this week, to leave us with three finalists and one decoy. We all know there were two decoys at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, so who were the lucky ones in competition for the big prize? Christian and Jillian, definitely. But in a weird twist, Rami and Chris tied. It was deemed that they should both produce a collection and present their best three to the judges as a tie-breaker, the winner of which will be the third and final contestant eligible for the "chance of a lifetime." I really hope it's Chris, but I think Rami probably could trump him with three looks from his collection. In any case, we'll find out in a couple of weeks.

Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Project Runway: Rami Kashou

I expected Rami's runway to be full of draped Grecian goddesses in shades of gray and barf green, but the man showed he could work with other styles and colors. It's a beautiful collection, mostly coherent, and a possible winner.

Click photos to enlarge

He's looking a bit like Gavin MacLeod here.

I'm torn between loving and hating the girdle-over-a-dress look of the first outfit.
The second one, a suit, is very cute, chic, and highly wearable. Unfortunately you can't really tell what's going on in the third pic, but she's wearing a dramatic black and white draped dress under that jacket...

...in the same fabric as the blouse in this very Japanese look (it looks like kimono sleeves when tied back for work, worn with an obi, but with pants).

The pants cuffs have a row of small buttons...stolen strongly borrowed from Christian's denim challenge near-winner, perhaps? Very nicely detailed, but with those hips, ultimately unflattering.

The other two outfits make a big switch to a color palette we're more familiar with. I like the quilted part of the second outfit, but not the rest of it. And I really like the weaving on the third dress. And it's nicely draped as well.

The gold snakeskin might be stunning on a shapelier model.
The second gown makes me think of antique Dresden porcelain lace. The sleeves almost don't seem like fabric, but something more fragile.
And the final piece is covered in tiny ruffles which get lost in the texture of the fabric.

Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Project Runway: Christian Siriano

In many ways, Christian's collection was completely predictable. Let's take an inventory: Jackets? Check. Puffy shoulders? Check. Ruffles? Check. Skinny pants? Check. Lots of black? Check. Fierceness? The kid's got it in spades. Ferocia Coutura made her presence known all over the runway, but particularly in her last few pieces.

Click photos to enlarge

He managed to tame that nasty cowlick for the occasion.

The second and third look are too similar to me - puffy sleeves, cinched waist, peplum, skinny pants - and I think it would have been better to stick with one or the other and then create a different look. But that's just me. Apparently there were lots of folks at the show picking him as their favorite.

Compared with the over-the-top-ness of the rest of the collection, this first piece has the austerity of a karate uniform. With puffy sleeves.
I like the ruffled coat very much. I not-so-secretly adore ruffles.

The poor girl must be suffocating in that neck ruffle. With the hat it's very fierce. But also very costume-y. The second look reminds me of something Michael Jackson would have worn in the 80s, when he still had an ounce of fierceness left. And somehow the third look makes me think of the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz.

Ok - where did this stuff come from? Big Bird's garage sale? Feathers were seen in several shows this season but not quite to the same effect as here. I think the ruffled shirt with the feathers is a bit much, but the long feathered dress is incredible. Very couture. And the center milk-and-white-chocolate ruffled dress is also stunning. These are pieces that can win it all for everyone's favorite Shih Tzu.

Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Project Runway: Jillian Lewis

Jillian scores points with me for featuring knitwear in her collection (for those who don't know, I'm an avid knitter.) Gee...who did that before? Um...was it Jay McCarroll? And did he...win?

Click photos to enlarge

Cute as a button in her flirty skirt, I can't help but wonder if JiLew attached a last minute button or three just before the girls headed down the runway.

Love the coat, the hats, and particularly the ruffle-front sweater.

Oops...momentarily lost me with the gold dress/footless pantyhose. It's a little trampy-looking, even if the model is all girl-next-door from the neck up. I like the jacket in the next look, but maybe not the shoulders. Third look: I like the shoulders, but not the wide black and white prison stripes.

I like the first two looks. The first of course we've seen from Jillian before, but with a little twist; the second is a sweater pattern I'd love to see in a knitting magazine. It's perfect with the slim jeans and the helmet. The third look is a bit too superhero/armor. It looks stiff and uncomfortable, and I don't like the flat bit at the front hem. It's too much like a leotard, but not.

I like the shapes of these dresses, particularly the bodice on the first one, but don't understand the gray cotton candy-trapped-under-a-strip-of-plastic effect on the skirt. The blue material looks a little cheap, like a bridesmaid's dress. And the low neckline coupled with the ruffly short hem = too much. It would have worked better on a floor-length dress. As for the third - I like it but the shininess is a problem to me.

Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Project Runway: Chris March

Wow - can I say that I love this collection? (Of course I can - it's my blog.) It's a teensy bit theatrical with its goth overtones, but it's not drag-queeny or costumey at all. Well, apart from the hair, and I don't mean that on the models' heads. The stuff that looks like feathers or fur trimming several pieces - it's hair. Yes, it is weird.

As far as the model's actual hair and makeup - I think it works perfectly with the drama of the collection.

Click photos to enlarge

Poor guy looks to have contracted a bit of the Fug Girls' favorite ailments: Stumpophrenia. How many layers does he have on? (I see shirt, vest, hoodie, jacket - he's got to be sweating under the lights and the stress.)

I love the bold graphic on the first dress, and that the velvet outfits continue the color. It's very clear that all twelve pieces belong in the same collection. The only thing I don't like is the pants under #3.

So dramatic, that blood red. I love it. And that third dress looks much like a Reem Acra....

...as does this center dress. I wish the other pieces weren't so dark so I could seem more details, but from what I can see, I love the shapes and the fabrics used. Maybe not so much the hair though.

Siouxie should have been front row and center for this show. I can see her in the coatdress especially. The center dress with the thorn pattern would be very Angelina Jolie, in her vial of blood days.

Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Project Runway: Sweet P

Sadly, I couldn't get into the Project Runway shows at Fashion Week. The Bravo PR rep even seemed genuinely sorry that she had no space for me. It's just as well, as I couldn't have stayed another day, especially since I had gotten sick and probably would have had a hard time dragging myself out of bed on Friday morning.

I thought I could be good and avoid looking at the photos of the shows, but I realized that as in previous years, we'll only be seeing three of the collections on TV. And so I am sharing them with you, along with my commentary (which you are free to ignore).

The first designer down the runway was Sweet P! How exciting for her to be able to show at Bryant Park. I thought she would have been auf'd long ago, but she managed to pull of some surprising successes in the past few weeks. Personally, I like her a lot, even if she might not be the Next Big Thing (but Chloe didn't strike me as a winner and yet she was...and still not the Next Big Thing). Sweet P's MBFW collection was full of surprises too.

Click photos to enlarge

Isn't she cute as a button? Except for the disfiguring tattoos, of course.

I like the purple and gold color combination, although I don't think the fabric choice is particularly successful. The silky gold blouse is wonderful, and the shape of the jumper is nice, but the fabric looks a little thick, like weird upholstery. *Love* the suit though - the stripes are mitered very precisely.

Where did that cape come from! I would love to see it move! And here's what's underneath (reminds me of an armadillo). The plaid dress is cute, but the hose makes her look as if she has a skin disease.

The top isn't working for me with that plaid, but I can see why she chose that fabric. The next two pieces seem out of place - they don't have any continuity with the rest of the collection, and that's a problem. I don't quite hate them, but I don't like them either.

Love the first dress, with the embellishment, even though it looks to be a wee bit sloppy. The pattern on the middle dress is really groovy, kinda Deco, I like it. And then we have another outfit that doesn't fit the collection.

All-in-all, I think Sweet P did very well. Perhaps not well enough to win it all though. But stay tuned!

Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Reem Acra

I fell in love with Reem Acra bridal when I was shopping for my wedding dress back in 2000. The fanciful creations of this Lebanese-American designer were not really my personal style (I wanted a far simpler wedding gown), but I appreciated them from an artistic standpoint. I was thrilled to be able to see her Fall 2008 collection come down the runway at Bryant Park.

The silk ombre fabric was one of the most striking I saw at the tents.

A more subtle ombre, in silk satin faced chiffon.

Draping is in! hey Rami! These double-faced silk charmeuse dresses glinted like jewels under the lights.

The dresses were pretty, of course, but the gowns were subtly spectacular. This one was sheer and would require some pretty undies and pasties if worn in public. Or maybe a nice old-fashioned slip. :)

This antique gold silk sequin gown really must be seen to be appreciated. The only thing I would change would be the shape of the neckline. I think a straight armhole works more gracefully with a matching straight boat-neck.

The embroidery is on a layer of tulle over the red sheath. Gorgeous and exotic.

Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Nanette Lapore

I was excited that I was able to attend the Nanette Lapore show, but then felt a little underwhelmed once inside the tent.

I do like this coat, plaid and furry though it may be.

These remind me of repurposed Catholic school uniforms.

The plaid fabric of this dress looks like it would be itchy, again, like Catholic school uniforms. The shape is really cute though, and I'd love it in a basic black.

I'm not sure where this one comes from. It's very plain in comparison to other pieces in the show, but overall I like it.

This is just ugly. The colors, the shape. It reminds me of a pair of hideous striped footie pajamas I had in the 70s. Ugh.

And then we have this. Cute all around. Love the classic shape of the coat. The model looks a bit pleased with herself too.

Unrelated to Nanette Lapore at all, but look who I spotted milling around while I was waiting in line to get in? Her son's show was next, and eager Mom Kors got there early.

Either that, or it was MK himself, in drag.

The Grammys Turn 50...

...and what a craptacular it was! A night of strange pairings, performances both pretty good and absolutely awful, and some truly hideous fashion faux pas. Let's take a look, shall we?

Alicia Keys is a very pretty girl, but it was hard to tell last night. First was the green gown that did unflattering things to her chest, worn with an up-do that made her head look like a narrow triangle. And her false eyelashes only made her eyes seem squintier. Not her best look, but she has done worse. Last night, in fact. While performing an insipid pop tune (I am assuming it was the one for which she won an award that required much thanking of God and the angels, etc. For crying out loud - it's just a run-of-the-mill crappy song that's been sung better a thousand times before. You didn't save any lives, cure cancer, or feed the hungry. It's a Grammy, not a Nobel Prize.) she wore this awful getup on the right. The spangly silver dress made her look pregnant or at least fat, and the oddly shiny semi-sheer leggings made her thighs look like spasmodic sea lions writhing in agony after attempting to swim through an oil spill.

Mr Minx and I decided this dress made from bits of old brooms, dirty mops and soiled rags was the product of a Project Runway challenge that has yet to be aired: create a party frock from the contents of a janitor's closet.

Special guest Jabba the Hut appeared via satellite! Two suggestions: powder and a shawl.

Beyonce tosses her hair around to distract viewers from the fact that she cannot dance. She was clearly wearing tights/panty hose to rein in the thighs. You know how some people have cankles - thick ankles that are merely extensions of the calf and go directly into the foot? Beyonce has the thigh/knee equivalent. I'm going to call them "thnees."

What do you think - is this really Cher, or Frank Langella in a wig?

His ridiculous glasses and jacket cannot hide the fact that Kayne West: 1) cannot carry a tune; b) cannot rap. Please explain to me why he is so popular?

Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Bill Blass

I decided to take my chances and attempt to get into the Bill Blass show, even though I did not have an invitation. I managed to get a standing room pass and eventually a seat in the fifth row. Not surprisingly, I spotted a couple of fashion editors and stylists in the audience.

Here's Vogue's Anna Wintour, looking like a real sourpuss (or maybe she's just pissy because Posh has stolen most of her look and wears it far more successfully). Was there bad plastic surgery or maybe bad dental work in her recent past? She did not speak or smile, and wore the dark glasses through the entire show, barely acknowledging that there was anything going on in front of her. She was wearing the bizarre combination of bright purple skirt with a fur jacket and clutched the collar around her throat as if she were cold. Meanwhile, on the other side of the room, I was perspiring with my jacket on my lap.
On the complete other side of the spectrum is Elle's Nina Garcia. She animatedly chattered with people on both sides of the runway before taking her seat next to stylist Rachel Zoe. Nina may come off as a bit bitchy on Project Runway, but having met her, I can say that she's very lovely and charming, and almost shy.

Ms Zoe was swarmed by photographers and interviewers for a while before the show started and she seemed to revel in the attention. And I think I saw her get her picture taken with some fans at some point as well.

On to the show itself. It was very classic American, with luxe fabrics like cashmere, fur, and lots of feathers.

Although the vest is comically wide, the loose armholes swung in an interesting manner.

Crisp, clean, chic. The bow detail is just enough to elevate this dress out of the "plain" category.

There were several extravagantly ruffled pieces in this collection, variations on this theme. This was the most extreme, and I found the versions worn with either black trousers or black skirt to be more wearable, although this one is more interesting.

This dress must have weighed a ton...

...and this one even more. The sequins gave the impression of being bits of broken glass, which I think added to the impression of immense weight.

I will admit that I like the look of fur, although am a fan of the color the animal was born with. Nature already has a fabulous palette, and blue just seems wrong somehow.

This amethyst and black curled ostrich dress is awful. There was a black and white one in the collection as well, looking like a skinned dalmation/Big Bird hybrid. A solid color would have made these a bit more palatable, but not that much.

This halter gown, on the other hand, is gorgeous. The drape was beautiful and I really loved the color.

Project Runway - A Perfect Ten?

Tim also weighs in:

Rami: "I hate the pink. H.A.T.E. the pink. (I lie, I secretly wish I could get away with wearing pink. But think of my reputation.)

Jillian: "Very Sporty Spice. Tomboyish - or should I say 'Timboyish?'"

Sweet P: "This looks very Ava Gabor in Green Acres. I like it, but there's not nearly enough maribou on it."

Christian: "I love it - it's stunning - but I can't see myself wearing that much lace. The chaps, on the other hand, are a real turn-on."

Ricky: "Oh, honey. Not orange. It's awful with my complexion, and the gold chain does nothing for me. You lose, big time. Heidi - come get him."

Chris: "The hoodie is smashing, particularly the sparkly lining. This would be the winner, except I decided to go into an entirely different direction...."

Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Malan Breton

Before I get to Malan's collection, let me tell you a little story. When I saw him on Project Runway, I thought he was immensely talented and was very surprised when he was auf'd so early in the season. He also seemed like a very nice and kind young man. So when I started a MySpace page last year and found that he had one as well, I made sure to add him to my friends list.

He sends bulletins (notes that go out to everyone on one's friends list) quite often, and I responded to one, not thinking I'd hear back. I was using a piece of my jewelry as my avatar at the time, a jade and opal necklace. He responded to my response, saying that he loved my necklace and that he had something to ask me once we got closer to Fashion Week (Spring 08). I thought he wanted to use some of my pieces on the runway. In fact, he wanted me to help sponsor him. As a starving artist myself, that of course was not possible.

So months went by and after a couple more communications, Malan invites me to his Fashion Week show and says that he would love for me to come backstage. After obtaining my press credentials via my friend Diane (can you believe I was rejected otherwise?) I wrote to his PR to request an invitation, which I received.

Come Wednesday morning, February 6th, I am jazzed about the show and meeting Malan. I wear my jade and opal necklace so he's sure to recognize me. I meet the lovely Tbone and Laura K from Blogging Project Runway, Maddie from Glamalan, and PR season three contestant Diana Eng. Then to my dismay, I find myself in the "standing room only" line while other bloggers with seating assignments are whisked into the tent. I felt more than a little embarrassed at that point. Fortunately, they brought in standing room designees to fill in empty seats and Diane and I scored the front row! And seated just across from us were both Diana Eng and Katy Gerdes, also from PR S3.

The inspiration for Malan's 2008 Fall show came from Catherine Deneuve's characters in the movies "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" and "Belle de Jour." The clothes were spare with clean lines and in a limited color palette but punched up with interesting details. Unfortunately, and I offer my opinion here with the caveat that I am not a clothing designer but I might play one in the blogosphere, I thought some of the pieces lacked in execution. One pair of trousers cut unflatteringly into the model's posterior. Seams weren't clean enough. And maybe the fabrics seemed too flimsy (a pattern I noticed in several shows) to support the design of the garment.

I dunno...there's really not that much more I can say, so here are some photos I took at the show.

My photo of this came out pretty blurry, hence the Getty image. Diane loved the patent jacket, but I thought it was a little too much shine.

Doesn't she resemble Rami's big-headed model Ashley?

This dress was pretty, but entirely impractical to walk in. Watching that poor model laboriously placing one foot in front of the other without stepping on the dress was almost painful. And she looked like a zombie.

As Malan and the final model came back onstage after the final look at the whole collection, audience members stood and shook his hand. I was one of them, and despite wearing the jade necklace he so admired, I won only a look of complete non-recognition. Even after pushing my way backstage to congratulate him (after Iron Chef Cat Cora finished "I'm so proud of you"-ing and "I'll call you"-ing), I got the European double kiss and a photo, but he had no idea who I was.

All I can think is that the thrill of having a show in Bryant Park, with the attending flash bulbs, must have thrown the poor lad into a state of stupefaction. He had to have been completely exhausted. The models too, I'm sure.

I'm Baaack!

After a whirlwind three days in New York City attending Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, I am back home and ready to report, albeit with a nasty cold. Never fear - that will not stop this intrepid reporter from getting the news to you, yadda yadda, etc. :)

So let me tell you a little about my trip before I get into the shows themselves. On Tuesday I took a train into Manhattan and met up with my friend and fellow blogger, Diane. Both being perfume fanatics, we of course spent some time at Bergdorf Goodman testing the new Guerlain fragrances before heading to our first show of the week, Eventide. Somehow they didn't merit lots of media coverage, so I can't find photos. I did find this quickie YouTube video of the show's end, however:

I didn't realize how much waiting around was involved in attending fashion shows! But even though I had standing room passes for every show, patience and persistence won out and I was able to eventually score a seat for all of them.

Wednesday was a much busier day. First thing in the morning we attended the Malan Breton show. Immediately following that was Nanette Lapore. Then Diane and I headed off to Robert Verdi's Luxe Lounge - a swank pad where the exhausted fashionista could get her hair and makeup refreshed. It was really quite nice to be complemented on the way I did my eye makeup and to be told that I have beautiful skin! There was also plenty of food and drink (I had a hummus and roasted veggie sandwich) a huge flat-screen TV, and comfy couches on which to relax from the hectic pace of the tents. Robert Verdi himself was there. I loved him on the Discovery show, Surprise by Design because he seemed like a really down-to-earth, unpretentious, fun guy. The more I see of him, the more I like him. So when he came over and introduced himself to us, I handed him a business card and blurted out, "I love you!" He seemed surprised for only a nanosecond before he replied, "I love you too." Boy, I did I feel dumb and fangirly! Eva Longoria also made an appearance at the Lounge for a short while.

Diane wasn't feeling well so left for home on Wednesday afternoon, leaving me to attend Thursday's Bill Blass and Reem Acra shows on my own. I also did some more fragrance shopping and had quite the extravagant lunch (which you'll have to read about in my food blog...).

More on the shows to come!

Minx Goes to Fashion Week

I'll be gone for a few days, so there won't be any new posts until the weekend. I promise to soak up as much of the Fashion Week experience as possible and will report back on everything upon my return!

In the meantime, you can check out the shows live on the American Express Fashion Network! I must confess that I have had it open in the background pretty much the entire time I've been at my computer. The between-show interviews get repetitive after a while, but I mostly wait for the shows to start and then switch tabs on my browser to have a watch.

Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Carolina Herrera

Carolina Herrera's Fall 08 collection seems to blur the line between the hunter and the hunted. Plaids, fur, and copious feathers flounced down the runway, all in a beautiful Autumnal palette.

I love this coat. The way it flowed as the model walked was stunning.

Here's an example of the hunted: homage to a pheasant. In fact, there were long pheasant tail feathers on every look.

This beautiful bronze gown had a feather ornament on the right side.

This was a bit henhouse floor though.

I love the juxtaposition between the elegant pewter dress and the more casual vest.

These mustard-colored velvet pants are gorgeous.

She reminds me a bit of a turkey; great color though

I want this coat!

Very Sherwood Forest.

Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Jonathan Saunders

Scottish-born designer Jonathan Saunders seems to have been channeling science fiction shows like Space:1999 when he was designing his Fall 08 collection. It's somewhat futuristic, but still wearable.

See what I mean?

This military/equestrian mix is probably my favorite of the collection. It's a well-tailored look possessing a very tidy femininity.

The jacket is very science fiction uniform-y, made feminine with the flowy green loincloth. Not that loincloths are feminine....

I do love this cape, but not the pants so much. Only very special people can get away with wearing a bold pattern on their bottom halves.

Need a place to perch your guinea pigs when you take a walk?

Now this looks very comfy. I like the color and the wide ribbed/striped trim.

She looks like she could be a Senator from Alderaan

Where did this frilly feminine dress come from? It really seems out of place in this otherwise severely tailored collection.

I love the shape of the skirt, the whole dress actually. And the colors, although I'm not a fan of the patchy-patchy look.

Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Diane Von Furstenberg

I've always loved Diane Von Furstenberg's designs and her Fall 08 collection is no exception. It's very retro, harking back to more than one past era, and connected by the skinny belt, worn over everything including jackets. Beautiful, and the pieces look to be very mix-and-matchable with their largely neutral color palette.

This slinky wrap dress looks to be of molten gold.

I love the shape and bold pattern on this dress.

I'm not crazy about the pattern on the skirt, but I do like the shape of the jacket very much.

Very Lois Lane, striding purposefully to cover the next big story.

Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Rock & Republic

Sexy, sleek, modern, edgy - all words that can be used to describe Rock & Republic's Fall 2008 collection. It's unusual, but I loved every piece in this collection, both men's and women's wear, and especially the leather.

I have always liked the look of a long, well-fitted coat on a man. Particularly a trench.

One really needs to be toned (or in head-to-toe Spanx) to wear these dresses, but oh how sleek and sexy they are! I love the purples - the only color in the collection other than black.

The first suit really caught my eye - very menswear, but perfectly cut for a woman's figure. And the skirt is a wee bit short on the third look, but the jacket is marvelous. I love all of the different collar shapes in this collection - while every look belongs to a coherent whole, there's not a lot of repetition.

How hot are these coats? The leather looks so soft, yet there is a toughness about it. The shape of coat three (all of them, actually) would translate just as well into other fabrics, but somehow it's the leather that really makes the look.

Fall 2008 Fashion Week - Victorya Hong

Project Runway's most recently auf'd contestant Victorya Hong showed her Na Be collection at Bryant Park on Friday night. Kudos to her for showing at such a prestigious location without finishing in the top four! I was hoping for something really interesting from Ms Hong, but I am afraid that the collection is pretty blah. Don't get me wrong - there are some really nice wearable pieces in there, but nothing we haven't seen before.

This one I don't like at all.

And this is too much like a nightshirt.

...but I like the color of the pants

The shape and color both, as well as the silky fabric, make this simple piece quite lovely.

The neon yellow shows a clear 80s influence to the collection...

...but a little goes a long way, Victorya.

I love the vest and the cut of the pants

And this skirt has a lovely drape

Fall Fashion Week 2008 - Nautica, Red Dress, Perry Ellis

The runway mayhem has begun! The first show of the season was Nautica. Designer Mirian Lamberth blended the company's signature nautical theme with more city-ready looks. Not sure about the whole jacket under the blazer look though - somewhat defeats the purpose of the windbreaker.

I thought this model was especially handsome. Most of the rest of them looked like they had an attitude problem.

Next up was The Heart's Truth Red Dress Collection - a star-studded affair featuring celebrity models wearing red dresses designed by several top designers.

Molly Sims' kept tugging at her bodice in order to prevent a wardrobe malfunction.

Lisa Rinna worked her fringe

Mary Lynn Rajskub looked a bit like Zach Braff in drag

Joss Stone couldn't be bothered with wearing shoes for the occasion, but at least she didn't have her customary joint in hand.

Liza Minnelli concluded the show with a song. The outfit she wore was very much like something out of her own closet. I hate the detail on the pants.

Third on the schedule was menswear by Perry Ellis. The look was mostly classic with a few quirks thrown in for interest.

Doesn't get much more classic than this leather jacket.

I really like this sweater - it reminds me of patterns for Noro self-striping yarn.

Not that I condone this combination, but I thought the pants were interesting.

Is this style of sweater going to come back? Eeek!

Nice look, apart from those damn rubber boots.

I had to laugh at this one. Nightshirt, flap hat, old man sweater, and rubber boots!
